Answers to common questions about Jayaraj Foundation

We’ve compiled the most frequently asked questions about our foundation and programs. If you’re unsure where to start, you’ll likely find your answer here.

What is the Jayaraj Foundation and when was it established?

The Jayaraj Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Jayaraj Rajasekharan Nair, an Indian filmmaker and nature lover, with the objective of furthering the welfare of all individuals through art, sports, compassion and nature conservation. The foundation was established in 2010 and officially launched on June 6th, 2014.

The foundation operates two main programs:

  • World Organisation of Hope (WOH) with its SMART program (Sports, Music, Art and Recreation Therapy including Yoga and Meditation)
  • Birds Club International – an environmental initiative focused on nature conservation

SMART stands for Sports, Music, Art and Recreation Therapy (Yoga and Meditation). It’s designed to build the physical, mental and spiritual health of children through various activities including sports, music, art, painting, yoga, meditation, counselling sessions, and community service. The program serves children and adolescents in schools, juvenile homes, children’s homes, and tribal communities across India.

Birds Club International, established in 2010, aims to create rain groves in urban concrete jungles to build sustainable ecosystems. The club works to prevent extinction of bird species, maintain bird conservation, conserve habitats important for birds, help conserve biodiversity, integrate bird conservation into people’s livelihoods, and conserve forests and wildlife.

Yes, the foundation offers volunteering opportunities to overseas students interested in working with children from different backgrounds in India. Volunteers can work in schools, juvenile homes, and tribal areas, providing Indian children with international exposure and cultural exchange experiences.

Interested volunteers need to fill out an application with their name, age, gender, country, address, email, and citizenship details. They should contact the foundation at info@jayarajfoundation.org to receive an online application link. Volunteers need a current passport valid for at least six months past their travel dates.

Tribal children come from unique historical and social backgrounds and need special attention and orientation to bridge different social cultures. They often have limited exposure to the outside world and require encouragement and support to build confidence and integrate with broader society while respecting their cultural heritage.

The program helps children overcome traumas from social, economic, or emotional exclusion through engaging activities that build self-awareness, leadership qualities, team spirit, creativity, and coping skills. It provides a holistic approach to child development beyond traditional academic education.
